Updated In September, 2023 – Texas Holdem players have developed an extensive set of terms and definitions. This Texas Holdem dictionary explains the most common Holdem poker lingo. These poker terms are used at both brick and mortar casinos and online poker sites. This Holdem dictionary will allow you to follow and participate conversations at the poker tables without having to ask what something means. Knowing the common terms and lingo used by online Texas Holdem players is only a small part of the battle. You will need to understand Texas Holdem strategies and the rules if you want to win. Ante – A forced bet for every player in Texas hold’em or Omaha, but mandatory in 7 Card stud.
Auto-post antes – When this feature is enabled at Metropolitan Poker (using the checkbox in the lower left of the table window) in a stud game, the software automatically posts your antes for you at the start of each hand.
Auto muck hands – When this feature is enabled at Metropolitan Poker, your cards are automatically discarded at the showdown in turn when you have a loser. (NOTE: The software never folds your hand if it is a winner.)
Auto-post blinds – When this feature is enabled at Metropolitan Poker (using the checkbox in the lower left of the table window) in a hold’em-type game, the software automatically posts your blinds in turn. Other players will appreciate that you use this function.
American Airlines – A pair of Aces.
Bad Beat – When a player has bad luck for a period of time. Normally when your great hands gets beaten by even better ones.
Bank Roll – The amount of money you have available for playing.
Bet – To place chips into the pot.
Bet the Pot – When a player bets the amount of the pot.
Bottom Pair – When a player uses the lowest card on the flop to make a pair with one of his own cards.
Broadway – An Ace high straight (A-K-Q-J-10).
Bullets – A pair of Aces.
Button – The button. When you are the virtual dealer and are the last to act. It’s a strong position. You know that you are the dealer when you have the marker with a “D” on it in front of you.
Big Blind – The player to the dealer’s left posts a small blind, (a compulsory bet) equal to half the small bet, the player to his left places the Big Blind, equal to the small bet.

Big Slick – Pocket Ace and King combination.

Board cards – The cards that are dealt face-up in a poker game for all players to see. Also called “Community cards”.
Call – To match someone else’s bet. Matching the bet amount.
Card odds – The chance of winning with the cards you hold.
Cash Game – When you sit down at a table and play for every pot. When you are out of money you either leave the table or re-buy in again. This is the opposite of tournaments.
Cap – To take the last of the maximum amount of raises allowed per round of betting.
Card odds – The chance of winning with the cards you hold.
Check – When it’s a player’s turn to act and there has been no action in front of him and he opts not to bet, he "checks."
Cowboys – A pair of kings.
Crabs – A pair of 3s.
Cash Game – When you sit down at a table and play for every pot. When you are out of money you either leave the table or re-buy in again. Also referred to as “Ring Games”.
Community Cards – The cards that are dealt face-up in a poker game for all players to see. Also called “Board Cards”.
Dead Mans Hand – An ace and an eight for hole cards.
Double Date – A pair of Queens.
Dolly Parton – A 5 and a 9.
Fifth Street – Also known as the "river" card.
Fish hooks – A pair of jacks.
Fish – Poker lingo for beginner, lousy or bad player.
Flop – In Hold’em and Omaha, the first three community cards that are dealt face-up in the centre of the table all at one time. The "flop" also indicates the second round of betting.
Fourth Street – In flop games, it is the fourth community card dealt (also known as "the turn") and represents the third round of betting.
FreeRoll – A poker tournament where you can participate for free, but still win money! Metropolitan Poker treat!
Freeze-out tournament – A tournament with no re-buys, that is, one in which players can buy in only once.
Full House – Any three cards of the same number or face value, plus any other two cards of the same number or face value.
Gay Waiter – The combination of Q and 3 (Queen with a tray).
German Virgins – A pair of nines (9s).
Hand history – In an online card room, a virtual replay of one or more previously played hands.
High Limit – A game where the amounts wagered are high.
Heads-Up – When only two players are involved with a hand.
Hole cards – The down cards that every player receives. Also called Pocket Cards.
Jack Ass – Pocket Ace and Jack combination.
Kicker – The (hole) card that separates two players equal hands. The highest kicker wins.
King Kong – A pair of Kings.
Lingo – Poker slang or Poker specific terms.
Loose – Poker lingo for a player that plays many hands. The opposite of a “tight” player, that only plays good hands.
Main Pot – The centre pot. Any other bets are placed in a side pot(s) and are contested among the remaining players. This occurs when a player(s) goes all-in.
Muck – To throw your cards in without showing them to anyone.
No Limit – A game where players can bet as much as they like (as long as they have it in front of them) on any round of betting.
Nuts – Poker slang for the top hand at the moment (The nuts). A hand that no one can beat.
Outs – the number of cards that help the player and his hand at a critical stage.
Over pair – A pair that is higher than the other players.
Over the top – When a re-raised player comes back with another big re-raise.
Offsuit – Cards of a different suit. (Color)
Pocket Cards – A player’s down cards, normally referred to as “pocket cards” or “Hole Cards”.
Pocket Pair – When a player holds a pair in his or hers hole cards.
Pocket Rockets – A pair of Aces.
Quads – Four of a kind.
Rainbow – Poker lingo for when all the decks colors are represented at the table. This normally means that there can be no flush.
Route 66 – A pair of Sixes (6s)
Ring Game – When you sit down at a table and play for every pot. When you are out of money you either leave the table or re-buy in again. This is the opposite of tournaments. This is also referred to as a “Cash Game”
Satellite – A mini-tournament to gain an entry into a larger tournament.
Set – Having a pocket pair that matches one of the cards on the board. Also called tree of a kind
Side Pot – A separate pot(s) which is contested by remaining active players when one or more players are all-in.
Split – Tie.
Stack – A pile of chips.
Steamrolling – Re-raising to make a player(s) call two bets instead of one.
Speed Limit – A pair of Fives (5s).
Snowmen – A pair of Eights (8s).
Sunset Strip – A pair of Seven?s (7s).
Siegfried And Roy – A pair of Queens.
String betting – When a player makes a bet in a wrongful way. A player must declare raise before doing so OR move all chips for the bet to the centre of the table in one single move, in order to prevent misunderstanding about his or her bet.
Short handed – When you play 5 or 6 players at a table intended for 10 players.
Slowplay And Roy – To play a great hand, the “nuts”, slow in order to keep other players in the pot and make them bet more money.
Suited – When two or more cards are of the same suit.
Table talk – The talk between players around the table. Normally a bit edgy and intended to draw information or get other players out of their composition.
Tell – An action that gives clues about the cards someone is holding.
Tilt – A player is out of balance and plays badly. Due to a bad beat or table talk or similar.
Tight Holdem – Poker lingo for a player that play only few and very good hands. The opposite of a “tight” player is a “loose player”.
Tourist – Poker lingo for a beginner or bad player.
Under the Gun – Being the first person to act, being in the earliest position.
Underdog – The player perceived to be most likely to lose. Also known as the "dog".
Walking back to Houston – Pocket Ace and king combination of any suit.
