Updated In May, 2023 – There are different types of Texas Holdem poker tournaments available at online poker rooms. The difference between tournaments and cash games is that once a player sits down at the table and the tournament begins he has to play until she wins or is eliminated. All the players at the tournament table start with an equal number of chips. All players have to pay equal buy-in money unless it is a freeroll tournament. There are always one or more prizes that players can win at the end of the tournament. Tournament games are finished when only one player is left – the winner of the first prize. All prizes will be transferred to the winner’s account at the end of the tournament. Be sure to read some of the articles listed below before you hit the online Texas Hold’em poker tables for the first time.
Usually in Texas Hold’em tournaments all tables are balanced by moving players after few of them are eliminated. When only ten players remain all the players are moved to the last "final table". In a shootout players stay at the same table until only one player is left and the other players are eliminated. This is why shootout is a special kind of multi-table tournament. The player who wins the first table tournament will be moved to other players who each won their first table. There are also double shootouts and triple shootouts where the player must win two tables in double and three tables in triple shootouts to win the entire event. But in double and triple shootouts there is often some prize money for everybody who makes it to the last table. It can also be quadruple shootouts and more, and tables can even consist of less than ten players.

Usually buy-ins to satellite tournaments are smaller than on multi-table tournaments and the first prize is an entry to a bigger tournament where buy-ins cost much more than satellite buy-ins . The player(s) winning the entry to a bigger tournament from a satellite tournament have to play it. Nobody can get the cash value as an exchange for a seat at the bigger tournament but a player can un-register from the tournament where the seat was won and buy a seat to any other tournament. In cases when a player wins more than one satellite tournament and entries to a few bigger tournaments the player can get the cash value as an exchange for the seats . In some satellite tournaments there can be more than one prize consisting of an entry to a bigger tournament depending on the number of entrants.
Freeroll Texas Holdem tournaments are special tournaments and there is no buy-in to these tournaments. Participation is completely free. There are usually more players registered to these tournaments. Prizes on freeroll tournaments are real money prize.
Some tournaments are not scheduled and they just start when the stipulated amount of players are seated at the table. Such tournaments are called sit & go tournaments and there are a few different kinds.
Heads up: only two players play in this kind of tournament and the winner takes all the money.
Heads up 4 players match: two tables and 2 players at each table when only 2 players remain they will be placed at the “final table”. There is one prize and the winner takes it all.
Single table: Ten players are seated at the table and three prizes are paid. 1st prize 50%, 2nd 30%, 3rd prize 20 %.
Single table: Five players are seated and only 2 prizes are paid (70%, 30%)
Two Table: 20 players are randomly seated and when there are only ten players left all the players will be placed at the “final table” 4 places are paid (40%-30%-20%-10%).
Multi-table: Players are randomly placed at the table, ten players sit at each table and there are 2, 3 or five tables. When only ten players remain , all the players will be seated at the "final table". Information about the prizes will be given in the tournament lobby.
In the usual tournaments a player can buy a seat and all players start with an equal number of chips. Once a player is eliminated this player cannot come back to the tournament and can stay only as an observer. In re-buy tournaments each player has the opportunity to buy more chips during the tournament by clicking the Chips button. There are some special rules for this procedure: each player can buy more chips only during the first hour after the tournament has begun and there is either a fixed number of re-buy or they are unlimited. If a player is eliminated during the one hour re-buy time the option to re-buy back into the tournament will automatically be offered to the player. In general re-buy costs as much as the first buy-in of the tournament but sometimes it can cost any amount. The Prize amounts will not be announced until the re-buy period is finished.
