Updated In September, 2023 – Learning how to play online Texas Holdem poker is going to be easier for some than others. The Texas Holdem poker rules you learned playing with friends and family members may not be the same as the rules used by online poker rooms. The entire method in which online poker sites use to play a hand of Hold’em poker is much more streamlined and much simpler but if you are used to a slight variation in the rules it could cause considerable difficulty in adjusting to playing Texas Holdem online. The rules outlined below are consistent with how this card game is played at online poker rooms in 2023. I have added some useful links to our other Texas Holdem poker articles below.
Once you have sat at an online Texas Holdem table you will need to buy in. Online poker sites have minimum and maximum buyin limits for pot and no limit Texas Holdem. Fixed limit Holdem poker does not have any limits. When you are choosing a real money table to sit at you should never play beyond your means. For no limit and pot limit Holdem you should have 40X the big blind and 100X for fixed limit games. At Pokerstars, the capital of online Texas Hold’em, a $1/2 FL Holdem table will have a small blind of $.50 and a big blind of $1. Once you have bought in and sat in the poker room will automatically handle the blinds for you if you use the "auto-post" option. This isn’t mandatory so if you want to do it yourself you will just have to push a button each time.

After the blinds are posted the poker room will deal you and the other players in the hand two hole (only you can see them) cards. You will notice a small button on the table.
At Pokerstars it is a yellow "D" and the players following the dealer button (clockwise) will be the small and big blind players, in that order. Once you have received your starting hand you will see some options. These options are displayed in the image below. The image to the left demonstrates how the button, small blind and big blind work at Pokerstars, the leading online Texas Holdem poker room.
The image to the right displays the various options available at a Texas hold’em table at the online poker site Pokerstars.
The predetermined options can be used to save time. If you want to call or fold you can click on the appropriate option and when the action comes to you it will automatically do the option you picked. This option will be available when the action is on other players.
Once the action gets to you the betting interface will replace these options. The final set of options on an online Texas Holdem poker table are the sitting in / sitting out options. These will appear if you have opted to save time and use the auto-post blinds feature. There are many other poker table customization options but these are universal.
After you have posted your blinds, received your hole cards and decided that you want to stay in the hand the dealer will deal three cards face up. Texas Hold’em uses five community cards and these are the first three, also called the flop. The round of betting will start with the player to the right of the big blind. After the betting is complete another community card (4th Street) will be dealt, followed by more betting. Then the last community card (5th Street or the River) will be dealt followed by a final opportunity to bet.
You can use any combination of community cards and your hole cards to make your best 5 card hand. If the community cards are three Aces and two kings you will not even use your hole cards unless you are holding the fourth Ace or a pair of Kings. Online poker sites automatically determine the winner so you do not have to worry about missing a straight or flush and losing a hand that you should have won. The pot will automatically be added to the winner’s bankroll.
